What is TMJ?

A small joint with enormous effects

The temporomandibular joint (also known as the TMJ) is located at the base of the skull in front of the ear, connecting the upper and lower jaw.

There is a disc within this joint made of cartilage which enables the jaw to move comfortably and smoothly, as it cushions the impact of the jaw. The TMJ allows movement up and down, as well as side to side for actions such as chewing, talking and yawning.

Injury or damage to this joint is known as temporomandibular joint disorder (shortened to TMJ disorder). For many people, finding the right expert is the biggest step towards finding the cause of their TMJ disorder.

Causes for TMJ disorders are varied and include:
> Physical injury
> Arthritis
> Grinding or clenching the teeth
> Genetic predisposition
> Stress and work life imbalance
> Posture and core issues
> Dental dysfunction

If you’re experiencing pain when you speak, chew, yawn, or make any other movement using your facial muscles, you might be suffering from a TMJ disorder.

Some of the most common signs and symptoms include:
> Pain and tenderness of the jaw or face
> Aching pain in and around the ear
> Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
> Pressure and pain behind the eyes
> Headaches or migraines
> Locking of the jaw
> Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
